Exposure

Another goal of our program is to expose students to the legal profession. Many of our students do not personally know any lawyers, judges, or other law professions, and their impression of the legal profession is largely based on the fictional depictions they see on TV. By bringing attorneys, judges, and others from the community to speak to our students and taking our students to visit courts and hear symposiums, we can help them determine whether or not they truly want to pursue work in the legal profession and add an experiential element to their undergraduate education.

Preparation

Through the support of Dillard’s Legal Education Advancing Diversity (LEAD) program, our students receive the preparation they need to join the legal profession. Juniors are encouraged to participate in our Foundation to LEAD program, a precursor to the LEAD program that assists students with developing the logical and analytical reasoning skills needed to succeed the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

The LEAD program, which is our main form of preparation for pre-law students, is designed to help students get admitted to law school. This is one of the most challenging steps in joining the legal profession, especially for students of color. The program consists of a ten-week LSAT Prep Book Camp, a year-long mentorship program with attorneys and judges in the community, law school application assistance, and individual advising from our Pre-Law Advisor and LEAD Project Director, Adria N. Kimbrough, Esq. These resources not only assist students with gaining admission to law schools, but provide them with lasting support.
