Department Success Stories and Activities

As one of Dillard University’s signature programs, the Physics and Pre-Engineering Program is always seeking new ways to empower our students to be active and find success. Learn more about the most exciting things happening in our department.

Current Programs

Our department secures funding for programs that enrich the experiences of our students and connect us to the community. DU WISHES and LS-LAMP, for instance, are two of our most notable outreach programs. DU WISHES, or Dillard University Women In STEM High School Experience in Summer, is a summer program for high school females of color who are interested in physics and optics. Its goal is to increase the number of African American women in STEM fields. Meanwhile, LS-LAMP targets undergraduate STEM majors with the goal of increasing the number of graduates and placing these students into graduate schools. In addition, our department is involved in a number of major research projects that receive outside support, giving our students unique access to real-world experiences with advanced equipment and research. In particular, our Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) research program reached a new funding level at $913,545, providing even more opportunities for our students.

Student Societies and Chapters

We also encourage our students to get involved in other ways. By joining student societies and chapters, students can socialize, network, and pursue their interests. These student societies and chapters include:

  • Society of Physics Students (SPS) Chapter
  • Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society
  • National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
  • National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP)
  • Women in Physics Chapter
  • International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Student Chapter

Department News

From new grants and research projects to new programs, equipment, publications, and awards, there is always something happening in the Physics and Pre-Engineering Program. Most recently, we are proud to announce that the 2018 Dillard valedictorian is a physics student and our Society of Physics Students (SPS) Chapter was recognized as a Distinguished Chapter for 2018.
