New Student Orientation & Peer Involvement Advising

SOAR Week: August 12th – 19th, 2017




In August, the Class of 2021 will arrive on campus from all over the world and with every imaginable goal and talent. They are united in their quest for an excellent Dillard education. The primary mission of New Student Orientation is to holistically address the developmental needs of new Dillard University students and families in transition within the Dillard University community


New Student Orientation and its related programs (Clearance, SOAR Week, and Welcome Week) are designed and implemented to offer a comprehensive student and parent experience that introduce educational, social, and personal resources to facilitate the success of new students. Orientation focuses on innovative collaborations with University departments, and aims to develop skilled and confident Orientation Leaders in order to meet the changing needs of our diverse community.





The purpose of the New Student Orientation program at Dillard University is to prepare students to be successful by:

  • Providing information and resources that will allow students to make informed and appropriate academic plans and healthy social choices;
  • Creating a welcoming environment that builds a sense of community among the incoming class and providing meaningful connections to faculty, staff and other students;
  • Providing a framework for four years of success through the communication of expectations, norms and standards.
  • Increased awareness of academic and student life resources


Parents and Families

The purpose of the New Student Orientation program at Dillard University is to prepare parents and families to support the successful matriculation of their student by:


  • Providing information and resources that promote an understanding of the academic and social expectations of their students at Dillard University.
  • Providing opportunities to develop a connection to the Dillard University community through interacting with fellow parents and families, administration, faculty, staff, and student leaders.
  • Providing information to raise awareness of campus resources, services and programs.
  • Providing information about University history, traditions, campus cultures, and engagement opportunities to facilitate identification with and integration into the institution.
