Division of the Natural Sciences and Public Health

Description
The Division of the Natural Sciences and Public Health, in the tradition of liberal arts education, strives to offer a broad spectrum of courses and experiences to students. The Division's programs are designed with careful attention to the needs of the students, the professional preparation of the faculty, and the resources and purposes of the college. The division seeks to satisfy the needs of four groups of students:
Stern Hall, Dillard University New Orleans, LA 70122
(504) 816-4722- Telephone
(504) 816-4724 (Fax)

Majors Offered:

Curriculum in Biology
The Bachelor of Science program in Biology offers a combination of required courses and electives that provide a broad background with sufficient flexibility to satisfy a wide variety of individual interests and career objectives. The Curriculum in Biology prepares students for employment in industry, government and academic laboratories, as well as for graduate study or entry into health profession schools, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary, osteopathy, podiatry, and pharmacy.

Curriculum in Chemistry
The four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science enables the graduate to enter professional Practice as a chemist in the areas of research, development, production, sales consulting. and management or to enter Graduate or professional programs leading to advanced degrees in the following broad fields of specialization: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry or physical chemistry. The judicious use of elective enables those interested in health profession schools to meet admission requirements at these schools.

Curriculum in Computer Science
The Computer Science curriculum is designed to prepare majors to enter a job market competitively, offer appropriate courses to majors to meet requirements for graduate education, and provide courses to increase knowledge of non-majors with regard to the use of the computer as a modern-day tool. The program offers two options: Management Track and Science and Technology. The program prepares students for employment in computer-related careers as well as for successful completion of graduate study.

Curriculum in Mathematics
The Mathematics curriculum is designed to prepare students for a variety of positions in private industry or government, as well as for graduate study in mathematics or an allied field. The curriculum provides comprehensive coverage of mathematics, while including other natural sciences such as computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology. Because it includes various open elective courses, the curriculum is sufficiently flexible to accommodate the wide variety of interests of students, yet, by its scientific breadth, prepares them for the diversity of employment opportunities that exist for mathematicians. Students are strongly recommended to use these elective courses to complete a second major or a minor in a related area to gain expertise in another field. The most popular choices for such second majors are physics, computer science, pre-engineering and education. A Mathematics Learning Center is available to assist students in most courses throughout the curriculum.

Curriculum in Physics
The Physics curriculum offers the traditional preparation of students for opportunities in graduate study or research. Furthermore, an education in physics may provide an advantageous professional foundation in a variety of technological disciplines and employment or serve as a basis for fundamental research in interdisciplinary areas such as chemical physics, medical physics, and engineering. Dillard University Physics graduates have done well in prestigious graduate programs in such schools as Columbia University, University of Michigan, Howard University, and Georgia Tech. The department also administers a well-structured mentoring program, an Undergraduate Research Experience funded by the U.S. Air Force, and summer internship opportunities through several national laboratories. The department understands students' financial needs and strives to provide additional sources of scholarships to gifted students admitted to the physics or pre-engineering program.

Curriculum in Public Health
The Public Health Curriculum is designed to integrate broad, scientific, professional and administrative experience in the health field. This program focuses on providing the student with a broad background in the following areas: health services administration, environmental control, epidemiology and communicable disease control, community health education, public health law and current health issues. The program includes Health Systems Management, Community Health Education, Pre-Physical Therapy; Pre-Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy 3-3 program with. Howard University, and 3-2 programs with Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Students desiring to enter the public health program must complete an application before being considered for admission.
