Dillard University hosted its 150th Founding Anniversary Gala on May 11, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. The black-tie event was hosted by hip-hop legend and Dillard University Board Trustee member, MC Lyte (Lana Michelle Moorer). The proceeds of the event will go to the Student Assistance for Financial Emergencies (SAFE) Fund. The SAFE Fund was established in 2013 to help at-risk students who were on the verge of dropping out of the University because they could not pay their outstanding balances. Since its inception, the SAFE Fund has helped 300 students to remain enrolled at Dillard and over 100 students have graduated.

Grammy-Award winning artist Patti LaBelle performed at the 150th Gala and this was the second time Patti LaBelle performed at a Dillard University Founding Anniversary event. The Philadelphian superstar first performed at the University’s 140th Founding Anniversary in 2009. Throughout her entertainment career, LaBelle is noted for using her iconic gift for philanthropic efforts.

The Gala featured video and photographic footage of SAFE Scholarship recipients, past University Presidents and campus life. Distinguished alumni were honored for their career achievements, as well. Guests were served the following select dishes: Rocket Salad, Crab Cakes with Pickled Mirlitons Relish topped with  Remoulade Sauce, Duo of Herb Crusted Sustainable Loch Duart Salmon and Filet Potato Gratin and Flourless Chocolate Cake.

Prior to the gala, Dillard hosted a special VIP Cocktail hour for prominent Dillard legacy families, donors and leaders from the Gentilly campus to celebrate the institution’s 150th years of academic excellence. Alumni vocal group, Cafe Bleu covered soulful hits from the likes of Jill Scott and Floetry during that time while general admission guests mingled and participated in a silent auction.
