Persistence and patience. That is what’s needed to affect change. That is the lesson Dave Dennis learned at his grandmother’s knee.

Dennis, 76, is a veteran of the civil rights movement. His mother cooked for whites in Louisiana; his father picked cotton. Dennis became a leader in the Congress for Racial Equality, or CORE, and participated in the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964.

Always an activist, he also has delivered newspapers, worked in a convenience store, assisted a chef, tended bar, practiced corporate law and owned a restaurant and nightclub.
