As we enter the holiday season, I encourage each of you to celebrate and give thanks for our many privileges. We should consider the successes and opportunities we have enjoyed this past year. We should also take the time to appreciate our families, colleagues and friends. The winter holidays are a time to celebrate all that we have experienced this year. We are not entitled to our privileges, but we are blessed by them.

72nd Annual Holiday Concert Was A Huge Success

Lawless Assembly Hall had standing room only for the 72nd Annual Holiday Concert held on December 7th at 7:30 p.m. Dillard University’s choir earned the highest superlatives under the usual orchestration of Mr. S. Carver Davenport. All of the guest vocalists and instrumentalists, along with VisionQuest, Reverend Bowman, and the liturgical dancers made the evening a memorable holiday celebration. The Dillard University Choir, under the direction of S. Carver Davenport, performed holiday favorites featuring some of Dillard’s most talented students. This year, the concert featured one of Dillard’s most accomplished vocal artists, Dr. Valerie Anne Jones Francis.

Revised University Holiday Closings

The University will close on December 19 and will remain closed through December 26. It will reopen on Monday, December 29 and close at noon on December 31. The University will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2009. Please note this is a change from the initial Holiday closings announcement. The schedule has been revised to include December 22-24 as days the University will close to make major repairs to its waterlines.

 

Visit www.epa.gov Dillard Among Top HBCU's Awarding Degrees in Physics
The Dillard University Physics Department has been listed among the Top 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities that graduate 55 percent of the nations African-American physics majors, according to the American Institute of Physics. We are delighted, said Dr. Abdalla Darwish, Chairman of Dillards Physics Department. This ranking is an affirmation of all that we are attempting to accomplish. It is a wonderful compliment for our faculty, our outstanding students and the university we are proud to represent.

Strategic Pillars will serve as Blueprint for Dillard’s Future

I am pleased to present to you a formal publication of Dillard Universitys Strategic Plan. The administration, faculty, staff, and students have worked diligently to bring this document to fruition. The eleven Strategic Pillars are the result of collaborations with the entire University community, alumni, as well as local community leaders. Now, we are all charged with the responsibility of executing this plan. With your continued support, this plan will serve as our blueprint for the future and will guide Dillard as we build upon the legacy of academic excellence and provide leadership on a new global playing field.

Update Regarding SACS Progress

Special kudos are extended to Dr. David V. Taylor and all who are serving on the various SACS related committees, including the ad hoc committees of the SACS reaccreditation review process. You have engaged your responsibilities with zeal, completed your assigned tasks and have gone beyond what was initially requested to form action plans that would bring us into compliance. Your actions have been of heroic proportions and we are proud of your hard work.

Ms. Adrian Guy Named Executive Director, Alumni Relations

Ms. Adrian Guy, a Dillard University graduate, has returned to her alma mater where she has been named Executive Director for Alumni Relations. Ms. Guy, who received a Bachelors Degree in English from Dillard, also earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Va. She is a native of Memphis, Tenn.

Dr. Nikki Giovanni to Visit Dillard January 16TH

Dr. Nikki Giovanni, one of Americas leading poets and writers, will visit Dillard on January 16th. Her visit will include two special ceremonies. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Giovanni, a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech University, donated all of her personal books to Dillard University. She even paid the shipping costs to send her collection to Dillard where it is now featured in the Alexander Library. During her visit, we hope to schedule a ceremony at the library where her books are kept. A schedule will be announced regarding her presentations. In addition, Dr. Giovanni will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree.
