For over thirty years, Dillard University’s Upward Bound has successfully worked with local high schools in their efforts to develop the academic, motivational, and leadership potential of students who are interested in pursuing a four year college degree. Upward Bound is an highly successful, college-based program of rigorous academic instruction, individual tutoring, and counseling for high school students. The Dillard University Upward Bound is an academic program whose primary mission is to help prepare the high school student for post secondary education. The majority of the students are the first generation of their families to consider post-secondary education.
Upward Bound is a highly successful, college-based program for rising 9th, 10th and 11th grade students that incorporates rigorous academic instruction, individual tutoring, and counseling. The majority of the students are the first generation of their families to consider college, and the program is designed to reach those students with the potential to successfully complete a post-secondary education.
The Upward Bound Program offers a comprehensive instructional component that includes a residential summer component, an academic year component, extra-curricula activities and a Summer Bridge component.
Residential Summer Component: The residential summer component is a challenging yet exciting session where participants live in dormitories and participate in courses designed to increase their academic performance.
Academic Year Component: The academic year component is a comprehensive, year-round, enrichment program where students attend evening tutorials and Saturday morning sessions. These classes are designed to help strengthen their skills. Also, Upward Bound students engage in volunteer service projects and attend cultural and educational outings.
Summer Bridge: The summer following the student’s graduation from high school is referred to as the Summer Bridge experience. Bridge students are allowed to take college courses and receive transferable college credits. The number of hours pursued is based on the availability of funds received by the program. Students also participate in cultural and volunteer service projects.
Dillard University’s Upward Bound is here to assist, guide and coach pre-collegiate students as they prepare for enrollment beyond secondary school.
