shell shocked docDillard University first-year students will host a screening of Shell Shocked, a new documentary about gun violence in New Orleans, on April 22 at 7 p.m. in the Georges Auditorium in the Professional Schools and Sciences Building.

Following the screening, the film’s writer and director, John Richie, will participate in an audience Q&A. Dillard welcomes the public to attend the free screening, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Shell Shocked, produced by the New Orleans-based Scrub Brush Productions, captures opinions and testimonies from activists, community leaders, police, city officials, youth program directors, family and friends of victims, and the children who live in the midst of violent communities in New Orleans in an attempt to identify positive solutions.

After Dillard students watched the film earlier this year in a first-year seminar course, they arranged a screening for the community.

“Watching Shell Shocked really changed my perception of violence in New Orleans,” said Salimah Ali, a freshman mass communication major from Houston. “We want to screen it to draw attention to the problem and to get people talking about solutions.”

The film will be used to raise awareness and funding for anti-crime and violence prevention youth programs in New Orleans. To learn more about the film, visit
