(New Orleans) — The Dillard University Concert Choir culminates its spring tour with a concert set for Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Lawless Assembly Hall located on Dillard’s campus at 2601 Gentilly Blvd. in New Orleans. Under the leadership and direction of Professor S. Carver Davenport and accompanist, Dr. Lucian Zidaru, the performance will start at 4 pm. The concert is free and open to the public.
The 27-member choir began its tour on March 12th, performing at well-attended venues in Dallas, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama. The repertoire consists of Negro spirituals, classical masterpieces, folk and art songs, jazz and a hint of blues.
“The tour was fantastic and this will be our first Spring concert in the chapel since Hurricane Katrina,” said choir director, S. Carver Davenport. “We have 10 graduating seniors who will get an opportunity to perform one last time where it all began for them four years ago.”
“One of our major selections will be Come Sweet Death composed by J.S. Bach,” said Davenport. “What makes it so different is that we are performing this piece with a contemporary choreography setting. We will also present a selection depicting New Orleans, giving the audience a taste of New Orleans with the performance of St. James Infirmary and Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans.
Known for its signature selections, the choir is expected to sing such greats as Lift Every Voice and Sing and In Bright Mansions Above.
