Jakarah PorterStudent Spotlight: Jakarah Porter

"Dillard Student Government Association President 2012-2013"

The Dillard University (DU) campus is a picturesque location, the subject of numerous photos, posters and marketing materials. It brings joy, ceremony and pageantry to the institution. But for rising senior Jakarah Porter, it ultimately brought her to the school itself.

“I had already made my housing deposit at another school,” says the Mobile, AL native who, upon her arrival to the DU campus, noticed something changed. Though she had never planned on attending an HBUC, Porter says she quickly changed her mind about where she was going to study once she set foot on the Avenue of the Oaks.

“It might sound crazy, but this place brought me peace,” she says with total earnestness.

The rising senior and SGA President says “the ground at Dillard is perfect for cultivating success,” and she aims to make sure all her fellow classmates are successful. Porter lists a host of resources at Dillard that she has taken advantage of such as extra tutoring sessions, writing labs, and career services, all of which have helped her to get where she is today – finishing her studies at Dillard and on her way to law school.

Though she credits the abundance of resources and opportunities at Dillard, Porter is quick to task her fellow students to take advantage of them and notes, “There are no excuses for failure”. The student leader wants every DU student to be held accountable for his or her actions.

“We have so many talented, determined students here and there’s no reason to be unsuccessful,” she adds.

Hopeful about the future, Porter says Dillard is in good hands with the new President, Dr. Kimbrough. She states that she likes the fact he is student-centered and credits him, along with mentor Adrian Guy, Director of Alumni Relations, for motivating her to do more. The volunteer tutor also sees Professor Kem Washington as a major inspiration saying “she is just…. awesome”.

Porter is majoring in Business and Finance, with a minor in Accounting and knows the value of many things, especially hard work. With two strong internships at leading businesses under her belt, she is aiming for a job with a global company, specializing in corporate law. Her confidence seems unshakeable and she credits much of that to lessons learned at Dillard.
