French Quarter
The world-famous French Quarter is New Orleans’s oldest neighborhood. Renowned for the unique architecture, exceptional restaurants and late-night jazz clubs that line its narrow streets, the Quarter, in its entirety, is listed as a National Historical Landmark. Jackson Square, an open park anchored by the magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, has served as an artist gathering place for over a century. From the nightclubs on Bourbon, to the antique shops and art galleries on Royal Street, there is something for everyone in the French Quarter.

City Park
Beautiful City Park is located in the heart of New Orleans and a short distance from Dillard’s campus. With over 1,300 acres of green space, City Park offers a wide menu of natural attractions and recreational activities including the New Orleans Botanical Gardens and the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. The park’s winding trails provide picturesque routes for walkers, joggers and cyclists.

Lake Pontchartrain
The great Lake Pontchartrain, the second largest salt-water lake in the United States, is a short drive to the north of Dillard University. The shores of Lake Ponchartrain offer scenic parks and trails for visitors to enjoy the water. Located on the north shore of the lake in Madisonville is the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, which offers an interesting look at the lake’s history. The lake has been a popular destination for fisherman and boat enthusiasts for generations.

Gentilly Community
From historic arts and crafts bungalows and traditional New Orleans shotguns, to cozy Swiss chalet-style cottages and modern brick ranch homes, there is something for everyone in Gentilly. Live oak, palm, magnolia and crepe myrtle trees canopy its wide streets and boulevards. One can’t walk far in Gentilly without seeing wild parrots or squirrels.

Two centuries ago Indians and French settlers populated what is now the Gentilly community. An Indian trail followed the path of US Highway 90, or the Chef Menteur Highway. In 1830, the Pontchartrain Railroad was built and the Smokey Mary train chugged back and forth along Elysian Fields, bringing New Orleans residents to Milneburg, a recreational village on Lake Pontchartrain.

Families fall in love with Gentilly and stay there. The Gentilly community relishes diversity. Gentilly’s myriad neighborhoods provide a style of living for everyone. Elysian Fields road links the Gentilly neighborhood to Lake Pontchartrain, the French Quarter, and the central business district.

Description: Houmas House Plantation and Gardens offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a Grand Southern Mansion surrounded by the South’s most beautiful gardens. Our recent restoration of the Mansion and Gardens offers our guests a view of the way life was in the early 1800’s when sugar was king and Houmas House was the largest sugar plantation in the world. Guests will view a museum quality collection of antiques and artwork and will enter each of the rooms. There are no ropes to restrict the experience of touring the Mansion. We offer two restaurants to enhance the experience. Our Latil’s Landing Restaurant is in the French House built in 1775, and is a part of the Grand Mansion. Latil’s was named one of the Top 20 Restaurants in America by Esquire Magazine.
