Dillard Alumnus on Path to Cure Childhood Disease |

Dillard alumnus Byron Knowles is on an exciting path. As part of a research team at Vanderbilt School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, Knowles is working toward finding the cure for a rare intestinal disorder, most commonly found in children. Knowles was the recipient of several scholarships while at Dillard and graduated in Biology and Chemistry, with a minor in Mathematics.

Dillard Professor Kem Washington knows the importance of saving for retirement. In a recent article for Yahoo! Finance, she shares her expertise on saving and planning. "I believe having a plan is better than having no plan at all. Having a strategic asset allocation, reallocating near retirement and getting into the market as soon as possible would help individuals in reaching their financial goals better than those who are doing nothing at all", she says.

Dillard Alumna Fighting Cancer with Research |

Dillard alumna LaTonia Taliaferro Smith is waging a personal war on breast cancer from her research lab. The disease, which is a leading cause of cancer death in women behind lung cancer, has affected 10 women in her husband’s family. Perhaps even more.
Smith’s lab at Emory University is on the front lines of the war against breast cancer, particularly triple negative breast cancer, which disproportionately affects younger women, African-Americans and Hispanics. Each day she comes to work at the lab intent on finding better treatment options — and perhaps, one day, a cure.

Keeping HBCUs afloat is a subject of much discussion across the nation. At this year's annual conference of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCU Presidents gathered in Washington to discuss the feasibility of keeping these schools going. Dillard University's Dr. Walter Kimbrough was a vocal participant, requesting forgiveness for a massive federal loan to get the school back up and running post Hurricane Katrina.
