With the help of Google and some good old-fashioned ingenuity, Dillard students worked with local businesses and entrepreneurs to make their products and services more visible and accessible during the 2013 Super Bowl festivities.  Statistics showing that 64 percent of businesses in Louisiana lack websites despite 97 percent of all Internet users searching the web for businesses. A team of 15 students divided New Orleans into sections and canvassed neighborhoods offering to help shopkeepers raise their digital profiles.

    Michael Lomax

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) under the direction of former Dillard University President Dr. Michael L. Lomax, has moved its headquarters from New York City to Washington, DC.

Lomax described it as the country's largest and arguably its most effective minority education organization.

Supporters of the UNCF will get the chance to show their support next month at the Washington area's inaugural UNCF Masked Ball on Feb. 12. Proceeds from this event will support the education of almost 4,000 students studying in the Washington metropolitan area and others who attend UNCF's 38-member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

“What a fabulous opportunity, to be able to be involved in the Super Bowl,” said Mona Duffel Jones, senior director of communications and marketing for Dillard University. “It’s a great way to give something back to the city, to get involved, and to have fun.”

    WMK 2-20122

In an article on post-racial America and the unique opportunities they may create for HBCUs, Dillard President Dr. Walter Kimbrough shares his views on the status of affirmative action and acceptance of blacks in America.

The more that America wants to embrace the optimism of a post-racial society, the more its reality is painted by racialized social pessimism. But the gloomier the outlook on America realizing its potential as a nation of altruistic tolerance, the more that HBCUs stand out as the only architects qualified to truly build the concept.
