PatrickJefferson-EDOn Jan. 9, 2012, Dillard alum Patrick O. Jefferson, ’90, was sworn in as representative for District 11 in the Louisiana State House of Representatives. Jefferson’s goals as a state representative include holding regular town hall meetings to keep citizens informed (which he did throughout his campaign); ensuring the maintenance of local infrastructure; advocating for senior citizen programs; creating opportunities for young people; and providing affordable healthcare.

Jefferson, who has been in private practice as a lawyer since 2001, has also held a myriad of service positions in the community, including president of the Bienville Parish Police Jury, and member of the board of supervisors of Southern University, the Arcadia Lions Club and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He received his Juris Doctorate from Ohio State University College of Law in 1994. After completing law school, Jefferson returned to Dillard, where he worked in the Office of the President as administrative assistant to Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook, a position he held until 1998. He served as dean of students from 1998-2001.

Adrian Guy Anderson, Dillard’s executive director of Alumni Relations, attended the inauguration on behalf of the university (pictured). Alumnae Therese Badon and Rhea Lucien also attended.

Several Ladies of Jazz will descend onto Dillard University's Lawless Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 13 for an evening of phenomenal music. Iconic vocalist Rene Marie will be joined by other jazz legends such as Betty Shirley, Germaine Bazzle and Stephanie Jordan for a special concert beginning at 7 p.m. Sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the performance is one in a series of events designed to promote the music and culture of jazz while giving back to the community.

rene marie

René Marie, the award winning singer whose style incorporates elements of jazz, soul, blues and gospel, has quickly become a heroine to many; a woman of great strength exuding stamina and compassion; often explaining how finding her voice and self through singing gave her the courage to leave an abusive marriage. But since the release of her recording debut, Renaissance, this Colorado based heroine has also evolved into one of the greatest and most sensuous vocalists of our time. Unmistakably honest and unpretentious while transforming audiences worldwide with her powerful interpretations, electrifying deliveries and impassioned vocals — René Marie has drawn a legion of fans and music critics who find themselves not only entertained, but encouraged and even changed by her performances.

Dillard University is proud to partner with the Jazz & Heritage Foundation on this Jazz Journey. There is no cost to attend the concert and doors will open at Lawless Memorial Chapel at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Brendan Twist, Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications at 816-4328 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
