Dillard Hosts the 6th Annual Housing & Home Improvement Festival PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, July 28, 2012, Dillard University and the Community Development Corporation presented its 6th annual Housing & Home Improvement Festival. Held in Dent Hall on the Dillard campus, the event had a large variety of vendors, workshops and information sessions for current and future home owners. Over 65 exhibitors from banks, to small business owners shared their skills and knowledge with eager-to-learn attendees.

On Saturday, July 28, Dillard University's Community Development Corporation will host its annual Housing and Home Improvement Festival in Dent Hall on the Dillard campus. The housing fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Admission is free and open to the public.

This is the sixth year of the event which is sponsored by AARP, Capital One Bank, New Orleans Metropolitan Association of Realtors, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Entergy New Orleans, to name a few.

Dozens of exhibitors will provide information on insurance, lending, realtors, contractors, interior design, roofing, gutters, flooring, cabinetry, landscaping and pest control. A workshop series will feature presentations including “Reducing Energy Consumption,” “Creating a Community Garden,” “Do-­‐it-­‐yourself Plumbing,” “Increasing Your Credit Rating,” “Succession and Will Planning,” “Soft Second Mortgage Information,” and more.

“This event gives local residents the opportunity to meet business representatives in a casual setting that provides valuable information about homeownership and offers solid advice on home improvement projects from reliable sources, “ said Nick Harris, assistant vice president for Dillard’s Community Development Corporation.

Attendees can also expect food booths, live music, arts and crafts, and door prizes. Exhibition space for non-­‐profit, community and for-­‐profit organizations is still available. NAACP GroupThe NAACP Economic Department and the Environmental and Climate Justice Department will host their "Gulf Financial Capacity Building Initiative" at Dillard University on Saturday, July 21, 2012. The initiative provides economic education and resources to communities of colors financially devastated by the Gulf Oil Drilling Disaster and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike.

The Gulf Financial Capacity Building Initiative will supply local residents with access to hands on financial education expertise through partnering organizations, including the Mississippi Center for Justice, Operation Hope, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Financial Planning Association. The Initiative will also offer holistic credit counseling and guidance on credit rehabilitation, tax liability and filing insurance claims, and money management. . The objective of this Initiative is to reach community members, and explore ways for them to coordinate financial planning and education opportunities within hard to reach populations as well as provide them with resources to address pressing economic struggles.

"The Gulf Financial Capacity Building Initiative is a demonstration of NAACP’s commitment to bringing economic education and resources to communities of color that have been financially devastated as a result of the Gulf Oil Drilling Disaster on top of residual financial struggles resulting from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike” stated Jacqui Patterson, Director of NAACP's Environmental and Climate Justice Department.

Mr. and Miss Dillard Participate in Leadership Conference PDF Print E-mail

king and queen conference Students, Jerome Bailey and Johne’tra Trotter, 2012-2013 Mister and Miss Dillard, participated in the Leadership for Queens and King Konnection Conference held in Memphis, TN. Held annually in the summer, the leadership conference is designed to enhance and train young men and women to become outstanding campus kings and queens. It also exposes the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) campus royalties to etiquette and business skills that prepare them for executing platforms and their reign. There are also many notable celebrity speakers, scheduled seminars, collegiate competitions, and a culminating gala during the conference.

This was Dillard University’s first time to be in attendance at this national conference which is being represented by over 40 HBCUs. “I am so excited to represent Dillard University at this conference as well as network with so many other HBCU campus queens,” says Johne’tra Trotter (Miss Dillard). Her sentiments are echoed by Jerome Bailey (Mister Dillard), “We have an extensive list of community service projects prepared for the new school year and it is great to expose Dillard University on a national level.”

Mister and Miss Dillard were accompanied by Mr. Jerald Bowman (Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Development) and are supported by Dr. Toya Barnes-Teamer, Vice President for Student Success and Assistant Vice President for Enrollment, Management, Dr. Alecia Cyprian.

Farewell smileDillard University faculty, staff, students, Board Members and Alumni gathered on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 to wish Interim President Dr. James E. Lyons Sr. and Mrs. Lyons , a fond farewell. With well wishes, gifts, and kind words, various members of the Dillard community shared their congratulations, thanks and praise for a job well done in 2011-2012. 

The office of University Communications & Marketing created a video presentation, "The Year of the Lyons".
