Community Engagement Program

Overview

lower nine2The MHHDRC developed a partnership in July 2010 with the Lower Ninth Ward Community of New Orleans to address health disparities in that community. The Lower Ninth Ward was a poster child for response and rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It was, and still remains, one of the most economically suppressed areas of the city and also experienced the greatest amount of devastation from the storm. The Lower Ninth Ward community was chosen and targeted for capacity building because of the myriad of problems and challenges confronting its recovery efforts. The Center facilitated the community engagement activities and provided support in organizing the Lower Ninth Ward Community Wellness Consortium, as well as the technical expertise to prepare and publish the Lower Ninth Ward Strategic Plan for Community Wellness.
