The Department of Social Sciences strives to help students to understand themselves and the world around them within a broad intellectual and ethical perspective with a commitment to social justice and community empowerment.

Mission

The Department of Social Sciences is committed to producing graduates who are thoroughly grounded in the finest traditions of the liberal arts of which the social sciences are a primary component. The Department prepares students to understand themselves and others within regional and global contexts that are shaped by the African-American commitment to social justice and community empowerment. Each major in the Department strives to teach students critical thinking and writing skills, and the latest researched-based practices to successfully complete in graduate school or the workplace.

Goals

1. To graduate students who are competent in their major fields of study with oral, written, critical thinking and computer literacy skills.
2. To graduate students who understand cultural diversity in all its forms and who are committed to improving the human condition.
3. To graduate students who value the necessity of pursuing graduate and professional education to maximize their intellectual development and professional development.

Majors Offered

A Bachelor of Arts degree may be earned in one of the following majors:

• Political Science
• Psychology
• Sociology (With concentrations in Criminal Justice and Social Work)
• Urban Studies and Public Policy
