Through Undergraduate Research, students build important relationships with key faculty members. If the research or creative work is within a field that you intend to pursue in graduate school or career, this experiences can provide very direct benefits. Creating new knowledge does not have to wait until your Senior project or Honors thesis. First year and transferring students are encouraged to begin student-initiated research and creative work in their major today. Begin expanding your academic experience by assisting in a research or creative project with a faculty mentor. Workshops, clinics, funding and other support are available to help you succeed in your projects. Application Deadline: Monday, November 26, 2012 Performance & Winners Announced: Thursday, December 6, 2012 Become a winner by creating a unique rap song Win $50 to $400 !! Competition and Rules Contestants Every Dillard student has an opportunity to participate in the RAP in MATH ERRORS Competition. Students need not be math majors to participate. Winners must complete in two phases: Phase 1 – Rap in Math Errors Essays: a) Each contestant will: i) identify his or her math errors made on tests, quizzes, or exams; ii) correct their errors by using the appropriate math principles; iii) type each math error—the original problem with corrected principles and answer for each error; and iv) based on the error, create a rap with 6 to 10 sentences per error. If you have more math errors, you have more opportunities to win. b) Completed Math Error Rap songs must be typed on Microsoft Word, single--spaced in Times New Roman, 12 font. See Attached for two appendices to assist you in creating your rap: I) Two Example Formats for Developing Your Rap in Math Error Essays, and 2) Instructions on How to Type Math Formulas using Word. c) Submit Rap Essays by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 6:00 p.m., Monday, November 26, 2012. d) Judges comprised of faculty, staff and students, will select the 60% of the best rap essay entered. e) Students selected in Phase 1 will be notified by email and fliers announcing the competition. Phase 2 – Rap in Math Errors Performance: a) Students selected in Rap in Math Errors Essays (Phase I), will perform their rap with music in 7 to 10 minutes from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 in the Georges Auditorium. Students must bring their own music on a USB drive. b) During their performances, students’ Math Error Rap songs will be presented on PowerPoint and projected onto a screen for viewing. These student performances will be recorded. c) Judges will select the 12 winners from among the performances. The DUROP Series is conducted through projects sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research in collaboration with academic and administrative divisions and units throughout the university. Series projects are designed to enable student participation in research and creative activities in a variety of ways while facilitating opportunities for them to develop a community of peers with similar research and creative interests outside of the classroom. Series activities are directed by faculty members with a strong interest in undergraduate research who enrich these activities by sharing their experiences with the student researchers. Focus of the DUUROP Series activities are interdisciplinary in nature and, in many cases, offer students an opportunity to present their research and creative results in a public forum. The Dillard Mathematics Department is dedicated to the goal of strengthening students’ mathematical skills and computation abilities. One way to meet this goal is to identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics through competitive activities (e.g., contests, workshops). Rap in Math Errors, hosted in collaboration between the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Department of Mathematics, is a college math competition in which students create unique Rap songs to help remember, understand and internalize math concepts.
