Dillard University Alumni Artist-in-Residence Gilbert Fletcher 


Gilbert Fletcher is Dillard University’s (2019-2020) Artist and Residence


Gilbert Fletcher has thirty years of combined experience on three professional art tracks, that fine arts and design and communication arts plus fifteen years of teaching art in middle school.


He has had exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country. His paintings have traveled with four national tours, in group shows; Willie Berche’s Spirit House and Our Common Wealth: Our Collection, Exhibition Tour Works from Traditionally Black Colleges and Universities.   In solo exhibitions he has been featured on two tours, Documenting Cane River Creoles which traveled throughout the state of Louisiana. The solo tour was Painted Voices as series of oil painting portraits of American’s most influential Black Writers of our time. Painted Voices has toured to colleges and universities and now a private high schools around the country since 1998. He has lectured on the development of these paintings at The National Black Writers Conference at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, Artist in Residence at Indiana University in Pennsylvania, Delgado Community College, Indiana University in Bloomington, ID, Dillard University and the Blake School in Minneapolis, MN.


Gilbert’s Painted Voices: An Artist Journey into the World of Black Writers, has outstanding reviews in The New York Times, Library Journal, The Birmingham Times, The Herald Times, in Bloomington Indiana and Gallery and Studio. My paintings were published in several other venues such as the cover of the noel Chesapeake Song, by Brenda Lane Richardson, Prentice Hall Literature 8 grade textbook, Holt, Rieinhalt and Winston Literature and Language textbook, African American At the Long Struggle by Crystal Britton, Elle Magazine, African American Review and the Dooky Chase Cookbook.
