NEW ORLEANS — The Dillard women’s basketball program has temporarily paused all team activities
for the next 14 days due to a recently discovered positive COVID-19 test result found
during on-campus testing following the team’s return from winter break, the athletic department announced on
January 7. The student-athlete is asymptomatic. All student-athletes are tested prior to returning to campus
as mandated by the University and the positive test was discovered only after the second test was administered
following Monday’s, January 4, morning practice.
Despite only one positive test being confirmed, the entire women’s basketball program will quarantine until January 19 and follow all recommendations by the University’s chief medical officer, Dr. Corey Hébert, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and State of Louisiana health guidelines out of an abundance of caution. The measures are also being taken in an effort to stop the potential spread of the virus to other team members, fellow student athletes and coaches at Dent Hall as well as to the Dillard community at-large. The program will be unable to practice, workout or hold in-person team meetings until it passes all mandatory testing protocols set by the CDC. Depending on test results following the quarantine, the program can resume all team activities on January 19.
The Dillard women’s basketball program was scheduled to play in the GCAC - New Orleans Round-up from Jan. 11-14 at the XULA Convocation Center against Philander Smith (January 11 at 5 p.m.), Tougaloo (January 12 at 5 p.m.) and Rust College (January 14 at 12 p.m.). The tournament seeds for the 2021 GCAC Tournament, to be played from February 24 (on campus sites at higher seed) and from February 27-28 in Jacksonville, Florida at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports and Music Complex, are based off the scheduled six game conference schedule. In the event a team is not able to compete due to COVID-19, the games will need to be played before February 20, 2021. If a game is not played, for standing purposes only, the team that was not able to play the original date will assume a loss and the other team a win. These games will be considered a no-contest for actual record purposes.
At this time, the women’s program is next scheduled to travel to participate in the GCAC – Talladega Round-up from February 1 – 3 at the Billy Hawkins Center in Talladega, Alabama. The program is slated to take on Xavier on February 1 at 5 p.m., Edward Waters on February 2 at 5 p.m. and the host institution Talladega on February 3 at 2:30 p.m.
