#HBCUSMATTERS: DILLARD UNIVERSITY SETS
ITS 2019 #GIVINGTUESDAY GOAL TO $500,000
NEW ORLEANS—Dillard University will be embarking on its fourth #GivingTuesday campaign on December
3, 2019. As Dillard launches various strategies to meet its $500,000 goal, the University
reflects on how it reached its 2018 #GivingTuesday donations that summed to a total
of $305,102 in 24 hours! In 2018, the institution set a goal of $300,000 after receiving
multiple gifts on the 2017 Giving Tuesday that amounted to a total of $195,687; a
538 percent increase from its 2016 donations of $64,526. The annual record-breaking
results cements that friends, staff, faculty, and alumni contribute to the longstanding
legacy of the institution.
This year, donors will have the opportunity to donate to a University department they have an affinity to. Alumni and fans of Dillard's Athletics Department can donate the cost of new sneakers in place of a Giving Tuesday donation. Those interested in Dillard’s continued legacy of producing Black attorneys will be able to donate to the Pre-Law program. Advocates of food culture and history can donate to the Ray Charles Program in African-American Material Culture.
#GivingTuesday benefits nonprofits and academic institutions by encouraging global philanthropy. Following the days of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday takes place the Tuesday after these events, inspiring those to give back. It was developed by 92nd Street Y to celebrate generosity during the holiday season.
Dillard University donors have been benevolent throughout the University’s 150th Founding Anniversary. For example, alumnus Jatavian Williams '06, awarded Dillard University's Pre-Law Program with $10,000 on behalf of his law firm, Glago Williams LLC. 150th Anniversary Gala attendees and sponsors helped the University earn $1.1 million; the Gala’s net proceeds went to the Student Assistance for Financial Emergencies (SAFE) Fund. The SAFE Fund was established in 2014 to help students pay their outstanding balances.
Money gained through #GivingTuesday will help Dillard students excel at internships, academic programs, win mock trial debates, graduate and even travel the world. Dillard’s institutional departments thrive and prepare students to be world leaders in the workforce, thanks to #GivingTuesday.
