SUMMARY:The Amen Corner by James Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:Dillard Theatre is proud and excited to bring James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner to our stage to showcase not only a great African American Playwright\, but also to showcase the exceptional talents of our Theatre Majors. Providing our Performance and Technical Theatre Majors with artistic challenges that will stretch their talent and expand their skills is a basic goal of our program. And The Amen Corner is a play that challenges both our performers and our design crew. A play in three-acts\, The Amen Corner was Baldwin’s first work for the stage following the success of his novel\, Go Tell it on the Mountain. Juanita Moore\, a black American film\, TV\, and stage actress\, who was a friend of both Marlon Brando and James Baldwin\,\nasked Brando to lend Baldwin $75 to write The Amen Corner and the drama was first published in 1954. It also inspired a short-lived 1983 Broadway musical adaptation. The Original Cambridge Players took a Los Angeles premiere of James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner to Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre 1965. \nVocally arresting\, sensitive and hard hitting\, this play cries out to audiences then and now to hear the voice of the African American in 1950’s Harlem. It is a voice built from the phrases and cadences of Gospel faith. Sister Margaret is the local pastor\, much admired by her congregation for the strength of her personality and her faith. Margaret must confront the ruptures in her family and subsequently in her church brought on by her faith and self-righteous certainty. The Amen Corner is a play which compels the audience to consider the private tragedies of poverty and subjugation and is the corner stone of Baldwin’s reputation as a Civil Rights forerunner. \nTo purchase tickets for The Amen Corner play\, please call the Dillard Theatre Box Office at 504-816-4857 or  download the HomeTown Ticketing App to order online >> \nWhen?\nMarch 8\, 9\, 15\, 16\n7:30 p.m.\n \nMarch 10\, 17\n3 p.m. \nWhere?\nSamuel Dubois Cook Fine Arts and Communications Center \nPurchase Tickets: \nCall – 504-816-4857 or download the HomeTown Ticketing App to order online >>

SUMMARY:ELLIS: The Life and Complicated Times of Pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr.
DESCRIPTION:ELLIS: The Life and Complicated Times of Pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr.\na film by Sascha Just \nJoin us for an intimate Q&A discussion with Director Sascha Just and musician Herlin Riley immediately following the film\, moderated by archivist Malik Bartholomew.  \n  \nABOUT “ELLIS” THE FILM: \nTold in his own words and music\, “ELLIS” is an intimate film about the life and complicated times of New Orleans jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr.\, patriarch of the “First Family of Jazz\,” who turned teaching music into a Civil Rights Act\, mentored a generation of top musicians and\, drawing from his hometown of New Orleans\, changed modern jazz.  (view trailer here)  \n  \n  \nFilm Synopsis:  \n“ELLIS” is the first feature-length documentary about Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Marsalis Music Family. \n  \nThe film chronicles the life of this exceptional composer\, performer\, and educator\, the profound influence that the city had on him — and that he had on the jazz that came out of New Orleans. It is also a story of how one man transcended racial injustices he faced from his birth during US Segregation to his death from COVID-19. \nMade with the full cooperation of Ellis and his family\, “ELLIS” is told in the words and music of Ellis Marsalis Jr.  \nLive concerts (i.e Jazz at Lincoln Center)\, including a solo concert at the Marsalis Center for Music performed exclusively for the film\, are interlaced with verité scenes that place Ellis in his city\, plus interviews with colleagues and his sons Wynton\, Branford\, Delfeayo\, Ellis III\, and Jason. Archival footage and photos take us back to New Orleans of the early twentieth century\, to California of the 1950s where Ellis served in the US Marines corps and played with modernist giant Ornette Coleman\, to New York of the 1970s where he toured\, and to his classrooms throughout the years. \nThe result is more than a biography of one of jazz’s heroes. The film interweaves Ellis’ accomplishments with key threads of American cultural history\, placing him in historical context as someone who was both deeply affected by the world around him\, and who\, by responding to it\, helped to shape that world. \nDirected by Sascha Just  \n
