Renowned Scholar Saidiya Hartman to Visit Dillard University

Dillard University is honored to welcome Dr. Saidiya Hartman, one of the most influential scholars in Black Studies today. According to The Nation, “Saidiya Hartman has shaped studies of Black life for over two decades.”

As part of her visit to New Orleans, Dr. Hartman will engage with students and faculty at Dillard, Xavier, and SUNO. She is especially excited to speak with our community and share her groundbreaking work.

Dr. Hartman will be on campus on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 11 a.m. in Georges Auditorium to speak to freshmen. 

About Dr. Saidiya Hartman

 Dr. Hartman is a University Professor at Columbia University and the award-winning author of:
Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth Century America (Oxford, 1997)
Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2007)
Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments (Norton, 2019)

Her work has earned her prestigious honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2022) and the Royal Society of Literature.
