Dillard University, Louisiana’s oldest historically Black college and university (HBCU), proudly announces the establishment of its newly chartered Pre-Law Chapter of the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA). This milestone marks a significant expansion of Dillard’s commitment to preparing its students for success in the legal profession and advancing the representation of Black lawyers nationwide.
The Dillard University Pre-Law NBLSA Chapter was officially chartered this semester with a Charter Board of dedicated student leaders:
- President: Paris Simon
- Vice President: Cayla Gilmer
- Secretary: Laila George
- Treasurer: Giselle Abernathy
The chapter launches with a robust charter membership of more than 40 pre-law students, reflecting strong student enthusiasm for the organization’s mission of academic excellence, community service, and social justice advocacy.
Through its affiliation with NBLSA — the nation’s largest student-run organization dedicated to increasing the number of culturally responsible Black attorneys — Dillard students will now have access to enhanced professional development resources, networking opportunities, and national programming. These benefits include participation in the 10th Annual Southwest Region Black Law Students Association (SWBLSA) Convention, which will be held on January 14–17, 2026, in New Orleans.
“Black Americans remain the most underrepresented group in the legal profession, and this charter marks a powerful milestone for Dillard’s Pre-Law Program and our students who are preparing to become the next generation of advocates, judges, and change agents,” said Professor Carney Anne Nasser, Director of the Dillard University Pre-Law Program. “Since its founding in 1968, the National Black Law Students Association has played a transformative role in expanding the presence and influence of Black lawyers nationwide. This partnership comes at a critical time, as recent data show that the percentage of Black attorneys in law firms has declined in recent years. By joining this historic organization, our students are entering a national network of mentorship, opportunity, and empowerment that will shape their professional journeys long before law school — and help advance the urgently needed goal of equity within the legal profession.”
With this new chapter, Dillard University strengthens its legacy of cultivating future leaders who are committed to justice, equity, and the advancement of Black excellence in the legal field.
