NEW ORLEANS, LA — Dillard University proudly announces that Beverly Stanton McKenna will receive an honorary degree during its 2026 Commencement ceremony, to be held on the historic Avenue of Oaks on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

A distinguished publisher, cultural preservationist, entrepreneur, and community leader, McKenna has dedicated her life’s work to preserving and amplifying the history and contemporary contributions of Black people across New Orleans and throughout the nation. Her impact spans journalism, museum development, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment.

A graduate of Tennessee State University, McKenna has long championed storytelling rooted in authenticity and community advocacy. In 1985, she and her husband, Dr. Dwight McKenna, established The New Orleans Tribune, continuing the legacy of the original 19th-century publication founded by Dr. Louis Charles Roudanez. Under her leadership as publisher and executive editor, The Tribune has served as a vital platform for informed reporting, civic dialogue, and advocacy on issues affecting Black communities.

Beyond journalism, McKenna has played a pivotal role in cultural and historic preservation through the founding of The McKenna Museums and Le Musée de f.p.c.. These institutions are dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the stories and material culture of African-descended peoples, ensuring that histories often overlooked are made visible, accessible, and celebrated.

Her commitment to community development is further reflected in her work along Bayou Road, where she has helped foster economic opportunity for Black entrepreneurs through intentional real estate investment and preservation. By restoring historic properties and offering accessible commercial space, McKenna has supported a new generation of creatives, small business owners, and cultural practitioners.

“Dillard University is honored to recognize Beverly Stanton McKenna for her extraordinary dedication to preserving our history and strengthening our communities,” said Dr. Monique Guillory, President of Dillard University. “Her life’s work reflects a profound calling to uplift, educate, and empower the community. Through her leadership, she has ensured that our stories are told, our history is preserved, and our future is strengthened.”

The honorary degree represents the University’s highest recognition, celebrating individuals whose contributions align with Dillard’s mission of excellence, leadership, and service.

Dillard University’s 2026 Commencement ceremony will celebrate the achievements of the graduating class while honoring leaders whose work continues to shape and inspire communities locally and globally.
