NEW ORLEANS, LA — Dillard University announces its Fall Production, Ntozake Shange’s landmark choreopoem For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, directed by Richon May Wallace. The production opens the University’s 92nd season and runs for two weekends in October at Cook Theater.
“We are excited to usher in the 92nd production season for the Dillard University Theatre Program,” said Cortheal Clark, Associate Professor of Theatre and Chairperson, School of Humanities. “This season opens with a work that has moved audiences for generations, and we are proud to present it on our stage.”
The work is structured as seven poetic monologues (later expanded), performed by seven nameless African-American women, each identified by a color: Lady in Red, Lady in Blue, Lady in Purple, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Brown, Lady in Green, and Lady in Orange. Together, these women represent different facets of Black womanhood, exploring themes of love, loss, oppression, empowerment, and sisterhood.
Blending poetry, movement, and music, the production is described as one play, seven women, a lifetime of truth. It affirms the power of voice, community, and resilience, and invites audiences to witness stories of pain transformed into healing and hope.

- Evening performances: October 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 7:30 p.m.
- Matinee performances: October 11 and 18 at 3:00 p.m.
