Dillard University to Welcome Distinguished Alumnae for 2026 Fall Convocation Fireside Chat

The Dillard University community is invited to an evening of inspiring conversation as President Monique Guillory, Ph.D., hosts the 2026 Fall Convocation Fireside Chat featuring Dr. Beverly Stanton McKenna, recipient of Dillard University’s 2026 Honorary Doctorate, and D. Joan Rhodes ’68, distinguished entrepreneur, community activist, and culture bearer.

The Fireside Chat will take place on Thursday, August 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the Cook Theater and will serve as a signature event of the University’s 2026 Fall Convocation.

Throughout their remarkable careers, Dr. McKenna and Ms. Rhodes have championed entrepreneurship, community engagement, and the preservation of New Orleans’ rich cultural heritage. During this special conversation, they will reflect on their personal journeys, the experiences that shaped their leadership, and the importance of preserving history while inspiring future generations.

Dr. McKenna is a distinguished publisher, cultural preservationist, entrepreneur, and community leader whose life’s work has been dedicated to documenting and amplifying the stories, achievements, and contributions of Black communities throughout New Orleans and across the nation. Her influence spans journalism, museum development, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment, making her one of the city’s most respected voices in preserving its cultural legacy.

A proud member of Dillard University’s Class of 1968, Ms. Rhodes has built an extraordinary legacy through entrepreneurship, community service, and civic leadership. With decades of experience leading her family’s business, she has become a respected advocate for preserving New Orleans traditions while mentoring others through a life defined by resilience, determination, and service. Her commitment to community and culture continues to inspire generations of leaders.

Moderated by President Guillory, the Fireside Chat will offer attendees an intimate look at the lives and leadership of two women whose accomplishments reflect Dillard University’s enduring mission of cultivating leaders who transform their communities and the world.

“This year’s Fireside Chat celebrates the extraordinary impact of two women whose lives exemplify excellence, perseverance, and service,” said President Guillory. “Their stories remind us that leadership is rooted in purpose, strengthened by community, and measured by the lives we touch. We look forward to welcoming our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends for what promises to be an inspiring and memorable evening.”

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community are encouraged to attend this engaging conversation celebrating leadership, legacy, entrepreneurship, and the power of preserving culture.

Admission is free and open to the public.
