New Orleans, LA – Dillard University is proud to announce its selection as one of 21 institutions nationwide to participate in the pilot phase of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education’s (ACE) new Sustainability Elective Classification program. This initiative highlights higher education institutions that embed sustainability and climate action into their missions, advancing innovative solutions to today’s most pressing environmental and societal challenges.

The Sustainability Elective Classification offers a robust framework to assess and enhance institutional efforts across curriculum, research, operations, community engagement, and workforce development. Participating institutions will undergo a rigorous self-assessment process, fostering transformative change and demonstrating leadership in sustainability.

“We are honored to be part of this visionary initiative,” said Dr. Monique Guillory, Dillard University President. “At Dillard University, sustainability is more than an initiative—it is a commitment to preparing our students to lead in creating a thriving, equitable, and resilient future. This program aligns perfectly with our mission and values as a proud HBCU dedicated to serving diverse communities.”

About the Pilot Program

The year-long pilot program, which includes institutions such as Bennett College, Morehouse College, and Xavier University of Louisiana, represents a diverse cohort spanning Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), community colleges, research universities, and liberal arts colleges. This diversity ensures the framework is inclusive, accessible, and adaptable to a wide range of institutional contexts.

Dillard University’s Vision for Sustainability

Dillard University’s participation underscores its commitment to sustainability as a holistic approach integrating environmental stewardship, societal well-being, and resilience. Through this initiative, the university aims to expand sustainability education, foster meaningful community partnerships, and inspire the next generation of sustainability leaders.

The insights gained during the pilot phase will shape the official Sustainability Elective Classification, scheduled to launch in 2026. This classification will set the standard for higher education institutions committed to embedding sustainability into every facet of their work.
