Dillard University Mourns the Loss of Trustee, Benefactor, and Legacy-Bearer, David B. Dillard

Dillard University mourns the passing of David B. Dillard, former trustee, trustee emeritus, benefactor, and the grandson of James Hardy Dillard, for whom the university is named. His life and work were deeply intertwined with the legacy of education and service that his grandfather embodied, and his steadfast support of Dillard University leaves an indelible mark on the institution’s history and future.

David Dillard served with distinction on the Dillard University Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2006, earning trustee emeritus status in 2007. During his tenure, he played a decisive role in shaping the university’s leadership, including the election of Michael L. Lomax as Dillard’s fifth president in 1997. Together with his wife, Anna-Karin, he established the Anna-Karin & David Dillard Endowed Scholarship, a permanent investment in student success that continues to provide opportunities for generations of Bleu Devils.

Joyce Roché, former chair of the Dillard University Board of Trustees, reflected on his legacy of leadership and generosity:
“David was fully engaged in the Dillard Board when he was a member. He didn’t just lend his name but he showed up and gave generously of his time, talent and treasure. He also gently pushed all of us to do the same. Even after he left the board he continued to do the same. He definitely made his grandfather proud.”

His philanthropy extended far beyond his time on the board. In 2013, he issued a $100,000 challenge to fellow trustees that quickly doubled into more than $200,000, with most of the funds directed to the Student Aid for Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) Fund. In 2018, he made a lead gift that propelled a $300,000 campaign forward. His generosity continued to grow in subsequent years, including a $500,000 challenge grant in 2021 that galvanized alumni, attracted new donors, and helped the university surpass its $1 million GivingTuesday goal.

As president of the Dillard Foundation, based in Palm Beach, Florida, Dillard ensured that his family’s philanthropy remained tied to the university. Under his leadership, the foundation directed annual unrestricted gifts of $250,000 to Dillard in 2021, 2022, and 2023, providing critical flexibility to address institutional priorities. His support also extended to milestone celebrations, including his role as a top sponsor of the 150th Founding Anniversary Gala in 2019.

“David Dillard believed deeply in Dillard University’s mission and invested wholeheartedly in its future. His commitment went beyond philanthropy—he was a true partner in advancing our work and ensuring that students had the resources they needed to succeed. We will honor his legacy by carrying forward the values of access, excellence, and service that he championed throughout his life,” says Dr. Monique Guillory, President of Dillard University.

David B. Dillard’s legacy was rooted in the pioneering work of his grandfather, James Hardy Dillard (1856–1940), an educator and reformer who dedicated his life to expanding educational opportunities for African Americans in the South. It was in recognition of this legacy that Dillard University was named in his honor at its founding in 1930. Through his leadership, generosity, and vision, David B. Dillard carried forward this family commitment to education and service.

His passing in 2025 closes a life defined by generosity, leadership, and devotion to Dillard University. His impact lives on in the students whose educational journeys have been made possible through his gifts, in the university he helped strengthen, and in the enduring legacy of his family’s name.
