FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 24, 2024

New Orleans – Dillard University is pleased to be selected as one of the 71 recipients of the 2023-24 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant Program, made possible with funding from the State of Louisiana and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Dillard University will install 10 trash receptacles at the Gentilly Blvd. campus.

Through the 2024 Trash Receptacle Grant Program, Keep Louisiana Beautiful awarded 628 receptacles to 71 organizations in 40 parishes for a total value of $491,294.

As part of this grant’s requirements, Kem Opperman-Torres, director, Office of Sustainability, will perform a post-installation litter scan and compare the data collected to preliminary scan results with members of the Bleu Green Krewe student environmental organization. Once available, the data will be shared with the public.

“Our students understand the relationship between litter and diminished quality of life in Gentilly,” says Kem Opperman-Torres. “With these ten new receptacles installed, our community will be able to reduce litter and reduce the chance of it impacting not just the beauty of our community but the waterways and fisheries that are vital to Louisiana.”

“Recent data collected by Keep Louisiana Beautiful shows a reduction of litter by 78 percent in areas where trash receptacles are properly installed and maintained,” says Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “One of our organization’s key initiatives is to help build infrastructure that supports clean, beautiful communities. Funding trash receptacles is one way we do that. Congratulations to Dillard University for being selected as a 2023-24 Trash Receptacle Grant recipient.”
