Dillard University Hosts ‘Let Freedom Sing: The Experience’ Gospel Concert on MLK Day

Dillard University commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15, 2024, with “Let Freedom Sing: The Experience,” a gospel concert held at Lawless Memorial Chapel. The event featured the Dillard University Gospel Choir and the Xavier University of Louisiana Gospel Choir, attracting attendees from various regions including Dallas and Canada.

The concert celebrated Dr. King’s legacy, focusing on themes of justice and unity through music. Dr. Rochelle L. Ford, APR, President of Dillard University, during her remarks at the event, underscored the university’s mission: “As Dillard focuses on our mission in 2024, we are reminded to create a brave space in these troubling times.”

Bishop Delores J. “Dee” Williamston, speaking at the event, emphasized the significance of social justice, remarking on the historical importance of the chapel. Reverend Herbert Brisbon, III, spoke about the unifying message of music, stating, “It’s our honor to celebrate Dr. King and gospel music.”

Derrick Huggins, Founder and CEO of Avidity Awards, also expressed his enthusiasm for participating in the event, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere of the city.

The concert, aligning with the theme “love is a universal language,” showcased the enduring impact of Dr. King’s vision.
