Inter-Library Loan Policy and Procedure

Understanding the Difference: Interlibrary Loan vs. Reciprocal Borrowing

When you’re looking for materials that aren’t available at your home library, there are two helpful services that can expand your access: Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Reciprocal Borrowing. While both allow you to access materials from other libraries, they work in different ways.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

What it is:
Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows you to request books, articles, DVDs, and other materials from libraries outside of Dillard. Once requested, the item is shipped to Will W. Alexander Library for you to pick up.

How it works:

  • Submit a request through your library’s ILL system.
  • The lending library sends the item to Dillard’s library.
  • You are notified when it’s ready for pickup.
  • Return the item to Dillard’s library by the due date.

Best for:

  • Accessing specific materials not available locally.
  • Journal articles or rare books not in nearby libraries.

Important notes:

  • Delivery may take several days.
  • Loan periods and renewals are set by the lending library.
  • Some items may not be eligible for loan (e.g., new releases, special collections).

Reciprocal Borrowing

What it is:
Reciprocal Borrowing allows you to visit a participating library in person and check out materials using your home institution’s credentials.

How it works:

  • Visit a partner library (LINK TO POLICY PAGE) that participates in a reciprocal borrowing program.
  • Show your valid student, staff, or faculty ID.
  • Borrow materials directly from that library.
  • Return items directly to the lending library (not Dillard’s library).

Best for:

  • Immediate access to materials.
  • Users who live or study near a partner library.
  • Extended access when traveling or working near another institution.

Important notes:

  • You are subject to the lending library’s borrowing policies.
  • Not all institutions participate in reciprocal borrowing. Check in advance.
