Charles Fuller’s Zooman and the Sign
(New Orleans, LA) The Dillard University theater program will open its 78th season with a five-performance run of “Zooman and the Sign,” a Charles Fuller play about the impact of inner city violence on the streets of New Orleans. The show opens on Friday, November 8 and runs through Sunday, November 17 in Cook Theatre on Dillard’s campus.

“Zooman and the Sign” captures the psyche of a young boy, Zooman, who grows up without a structured family and is ingrained in a life of violence with no sense of remorse. During a shootout on a crowded street, Zooman accidentally kills Jinny Tate, a young girl sitting on her stoop.  No one in the neighborhood admits to seeing anything, but Jinny’s father hangs a sign on his house in an effort to shame his neighbors into reporting what they know about the murder. Fuller depicts Zooman as a stereotypical thug without hope and is characteristic of a growing generation of boys with missing fathers who are doomed to a life of crime and a tragic end.

Dillard University’s production of “Zooman and the Sign” is directed by Lawrence Weber, a recent Dillard alumnus. For more information and to purchase tickets, call the Dillard box office at (504) 816-4857.
