The Dillard University Concert Choir (DUCC), with its first performance dating back to December 8, 1935, has long been a symbol of musical distinction and cultural pride. The choir’s evolution over the decades is marked by significant achievements, including a celebrated performance at the White House in the 2011-2012 season.
Initiated under Professor Frederick Hall, the DUCC’s inaugural tour in 1935-1936 set a high standard for future endeavors, featuring performances in Southern cities and at notable events. This tour established the choir’s reputation for excellence.
Dr. Frederick D. Hall, a key figure in the development of Dillard University’s Music Department and Choir, once remarked, “The vocal talent among the students–Dillard University students– is above average.” This observation underscores the exceptional musical environment at Dillard, pivotal in nurturing talents for generations.
Over the decades, the DUCC has maintained its tradition of excellence, showcasing a diverse repertoire and earning accolades for its performances. In the 2011-2012 season, 30 choir members traveled to Washington, D.C., performing at the White House, a testament to the choir’s prestigious standing.
Under the direction of Dr. S. Carver Davenport, Associate Professor of Music and Concert Choir Director, the DUCC has flourished. With an unprecedented 50-year tenure, Davenport holds the distinction of being the longest-serving choral director among all 107 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
For more information about the Dillard University Concert Choir and ways to support this year’s tour, please contact Keith Tillman at ktillman@dillard.edu.
The DU Concert Choir is coming to a city near you, embarking on a tour that celebrates musical excellence, community engagement, and a historic milestone: Dr. Davenport’s 50th anniversary of service and leadership. From campus to venues across the South, our DUCC will share the spirit, tradition, and excellence of DU!
